François "Papa Doc" Duvalier Biography
Political Leader / President of Haiti
François Duvalier was the notorious ruler of Haiti throughout the 1960s. Duvalier was a physician (the source of his nickname, "Papa Doc") who worked in the Haitian government beginning in the mid-1940s. With the army's support, he was elected to the presidency in 1957. In 1964 he declared himself president for life and indeed, stayed president until his death in 1971, when his son, Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier, succeeded him. Papa Doc was an expert in voodoo who ruled Haiti with brute force and terror, with a ruthless security force, the Tontons Macoutes, acting as real-life bogeymen who routinely executed his opponents.
Then you have
The country has not had a stable leader for so long it can nor will it ever recover. We have BBC reporters talking to people out in the back woods of Haiti and they are saying there is no help. No kidding, you would not have had help BEFORE any of this.Jean-Claude Duvalier

24 Year since it was all over, and AID workers have been there, horridly some of them have died in this, but WHAT HAVE THEY BEEN DOING ALL THIS TIME?
Now all of a sudden we have this earthquake and we have to help them out?
I will tell you what I learned when I went to Africa, not as a tourist, but as someone who was going to work, even if it was only for a week, in the back of beyond.
DO NOT GIVE TO LARGE AID AGENCYS! THEY EMPLOY PEOPLE! If you want to help out go and do it yourself, or send money directly to someone within the country you trust.
I went to Tanzania, behind lake victoria a place called Bukoba. Lovely place. Aid workers? Assistance? nope, they did it themselves. When the bodies blocked up the river from Rwanda, they cleared it out themselves.
Sure, I am some sort of NUT, but for gods sake, if an agency gets so big that it has to HIRE people and PAY LOTS OF MONEY to these people, then nothing is going to get to the ground where it is needed.
25 Years after both the DOCs, and the country is still a mess, so when something like this happens, opps it all hands to the pumps.
I feel sorry for Africa, they can not suffer any earthquakes for us to wake up, we just pump the money in, the agencys take a cut, and pay out a little, and give to the leaders and the people get nothing, and we will never wake up to this.
But would'nt going to the place to help only add up to the mess there? With hundreds of people out there for the sake of helping the suffering thousands, but not knowing where to start?
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, its true that a large organisation which hires help, I wouldnt know whether my money is going into salary or relief.
Its so confusing sometimes.
Yes, it is possible going yourself could add to the mess, but, you know what is going on.
ReplyDeleteIn the case of this BIG mess, it might not be the best idea, but you and 10 friends could arrange for shipments of building materials, show up and build a few houses. It is possible to do things that way.
In Africa, single people going with items to help out do more good than any international group.
